This set of choral works with soprano and baritone soloists emerged from a conversation with poet Tracy K. Smith.  She wrote a stunning and gripping set of poems that assemble fragments from letters of African American soldiers and their families during the Civil War. These poems tell a story of hope and love, even as they describe the difficult conditions for Black soldiers during the war.
